About Nene Court
The Earliest dates for the site are located on one of the buildings when it was used to provide gas lighting and this dates from 1833. The site was rebuilt in 1909 still providing gas lighting. It was then used for the storage and production of gas site and was used by the Gas Board until the 1980’s. Part of the site was used by the Co-op as a distribution centre .
In 1991 the site was acquired jointly by Bestbuys and Time leisure Ltd. Bestbuys occupy what was the Co Operative distribution centre Bestbuys refurbished and extended the premises to make it into the large Super Store it is today.
Time Leisure occupies 2/3 of the site and the buildings they took over were previously used by the Gas Company for the storage and conversion of coal to coke hence the 80’ chimney which is the only one remaining in Wellingborough. Although there was no protection order on the chimney it was decided that it should be retained as it is the only remaining brick built chimney in Wellingborough and a reminder of our heritage.
The site was virtually derelict when Time Leisure took over the buildings which were sympathetically converted and improved. Time Leisure was given an award from the environment agency for the sympathetic restoration.
The shop units occupy what was the offices for the Gas board in a single storey Victorian building that extends for over 100 meters which is an indication of how much cheaper land prices were then.
